European commission spokeswoman:
"It’s Brexit that creates unique difficulties for the island of Ireland... The backstop is the only means identified by both parties to honour this commitment [ of avoiding a hard border]."

Donald Tusk, the president of the European council, has given his first response to the letter he received from Boris Johnson yesterday. He seems to be rejecting Johnson’s proposal for an alternative to the backstop.

The backstop is an insurance to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland unless and until an alternative is found. Those against the backstop and not proposing realistic alternatives in fact support reestablishing a border. Even if they do not admit it.
